Souris West Active Transportation

Survey: We need to hear from you!

The Rural Municipality of Souris West is currently developing a Souris West Active Transportation Plan. As a resident or neighbour of RMSW, we need your input.

The survey will be open May 28, 2025 to June 18, 2025 at 11:59 PM.

Public Meeting | SUMMER 2025

Join us at École La-Belle-Cloche/Pavillon de l’Est on June 25, 2025 at 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM.

This public meeting will provide an overview of the project to date and give community members a chance to ask questions and share perspectives on the future of active transportation in our community.

Active Transportation FAQs

  1. What is active transportation?

The Government of Canada defines active transportation as “using your own power to get from one place to another.” (Government of Canada, Active Transportation)

This could be walking, running, cycling, skateboarding, using a mobility aid, or any other mode of self-propelled movement. You can use active transportation to get to specific destinations like your friend’s house, a local business, the beach, the bus stop, your school, or work.

  1. What is the Souris West Active Transportation Plan?

The Souris West Active Transportation Plan is a roadmap for how active transportation should be developed in the community.

The Plan will detail the community’s active transportation needs and objectives (as shared through the survey, Town Council direction, and the public meeting), and it will provide route options with considerations to existing infrastructure, environmental factors, and land availability in accordance with the laws, regulations, and best practices for projects of this kind.

  1. Why are we creating the Plan?

Our 2022 Community Survey identified a desire by community for more active living infrastructure.  “Walking paths” was one of the most picked responses to the question “What would make RMSW a better place to live?”. The top issue respondents wanted to bring to RMSW Council was “trails and green spaces” followed by “road upgrades” and “paved sidewalks”. This feedback was heard, and RMSW applied to the Government of Prince Edward Island’s Active Transportation Fund to start the process of developing more active living infrastructure.

In 2024, the Government of PEI’s Active Transportation Fund awarded us the funds to develop this Plan as a first step in developing/improving active transportation infrastructure in Souris West.
